Cancel or transfer cell phones, utilities, and cable/internet

To start, call the provider's customer support number. Here are numbers to common providers:

Tell them that you’d like to cancel or transfer the contract due to a death. Be prepared to tell them:

  • The name of the deceased

  • The phone number of the deceased

  • Date of death

  • Social Security number

  • The account holder/creator's name (if not the deceased)

  • Some companies may require a certified death certificate copy

Note: The balance due on the account should be paid when the contract is canceled. You should not be charged any cancellation or transfer fees.
