Deal with a vehicle in Iowa

You need to continue regular car payments, maintain vehicle registration, and then transfer the car's ownership. You cannot drive the car unless you have proper registration, and penalties will be charged if this is not done on time.

1) Gather:

• Supporting documents (e.g., copy of the will, death certificate, and/or inheritance tax return)

• Fees

  • Title transfer fee: $25 (varies by county)

  • Registration fee (*may be exempt)

2) Submit the documents to your local Iowa County Treasurer’s office, which you can find here: https://www.iowatreasurers.org/maphome.php
