What is a concierge, and why do I need one?

This article answers our most frequently asked questions about Peacefully’s concierge service. Your Peacefully concierge exists to make your life easier, meeting you wherever you are in the process to help as little or as much as you’d like.

What is a concierge?

A Peacefully team member who is on-call to help you use our website, answer questions, and complete planning or post-death tasks. The concierge service can be used however you need it, from answering one question to actually doing the tasks for you.

Why would I need a concierge?

Put simply, no one wants to plan for or deal with end-of-life, nor should you have to spend hours learning how to do something you’ll probably never need to do again.

On the post-death side, the average estate takes 500 hours over 6 months to settle, costing an average of $17,000 in funeral and legal fees. Of course, this work is on top of the emotional toll of losing your loved one.

All of this becomes much easier if you plan ahead, but planning for end-of-life is also overwhelming without any help. Your concierge can help save you time and money (and maybe your sanity).

What types of things can a concierge help with?

Your concierge can:

  • Walk you through using the Peacefully.com website

  • Refer you to trusted partners or make local recommendations to fit your needs

  • Answer questions that arise like what to do next, where to find a form, how to file a claim, etc.

  • Help you offload administrative tasks

What administrative tasks, exactly?

If you are pre-planning, examples may include:

  • Informing you of the decisions to make and your options, including medical decisions, burial/cremation and type of memorial

  • Documenting your wishes and sharing with family to avoid conflict and guesswork

  • Getting your paperwork, accounts, passwords and belongings in order so family knows what to do and how to access

  • Creating a legacy project to remember someone by

For taking care of a loved one’s estate after a death, examples may include:

  • Preventing identity theft by freezing your loved one's credit, driver's license and election records

  • Planning a funeral and writing an obituary or social media tribute

  • Closing online accounts, finding eligible benefits, and dealing with insurance

Is there anything a concierge can’t do? (and don’t I need a lawyer?)

Your concierge cannot give financial, legal, medical or tax advice. For estate, tax and healthcare-related issues, we refer out to the appropriate licensed professional so you get the information you need. That said, much of the planning and post-death burden is administrative in nature and should not require that you pay high professional fees like legal fees. Think of a concierge like an efficient, personalized project manager to help you sort this out faster and more affordably.

(That said, if you do need a lawyer, we can help you with that here.)
