Cancel or change person on vehicle insurance policies

You will need to switch over the vehicle insurance to list the person now owning the vehicle as the "named insured" if someone is keeping the vehicle. You usually have 30 days to do this. If there is not a second person on the policy, call the insurance company right away, as other drivers may not be covered. Usually, the executor is covered when driving the car for maintenence purposes, but that is all.

  1. See if anyone else is included on the policy itself (e.g. spouses):

    • Other people on the policy can still drive the car

    • If no one else is listed, do not drive the car until after calling insurance. Standard auto insurance covers drivers to whom the owner gives permission to use the car. However, deceased people cannot give permission, so insurance must be contacted. Usually, the executor can drive the car for maintenance reasons only, but others are not covered

  2. Find the car insurance policy and get a copy of the death certificate

  3. Call the number listed on the policy and ask to be listed as the “named insured.” Here are numbers of some common car insurance providers:
