Handle driver's licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards in South Carolina

After a loved one’s passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver’s licenses, license plates, and handicap placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.

Driver’s License

To deactivate the deceased driver’s license, complete this surrender agreement. This form can also be identified as “DL-49” on the SCDMV website. Complete the document, sign, date, and email it back to webhelpdesk@scdmv.net or mail it to the following address:

License Plates

To deactivate the deceased’s license plates, it can be accomplished either online or by mail. Notably, if the license plate is expired, you do not need to deactivate the license plate. Only active license plates can be deactivated.

For online deactivation, go to the SCDMV website’s Online Services tab and click “Turn In Plates”, which can be found here. This is an easy click-through process and the only information required is the registration card for the vehicle. Once the online process is complete, you do not need to physically turn in the license plate, but are encouraged to recycle the license plate.

For mail deactivation, complete this License Plate Turn In form (also referred to as “452”). Once completed, mail the form and the old plate to the address below:
