Handle driver's licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards in Pennsylvania

After a loved one’s passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver’s licenses, license plates, and handicap placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules. 

Driver’s License / License Plates

To have the deceased’s driving record updated to reflect their passing, Pennsylvania requests that you submit a copy of one of the following documents to the Department of Transportation (address below):

  • Funeral announcement from Funeral Home

  • Death Certificate

  • Obituary article from newspaper

You are not required to return the license or license plates, provided one of the documents listed above has been submitted.

Disabled Person Placard (Handicap Placard)

If the placard has expired, it can be destroyed. If the placard is still valid, it must be returned to PennDOT.  The placard can be mailed to:
