Handle driver's licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards in New Jersey

After a loved one’s passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver’s licenses, license plates, and handicap placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.

Driver’s License

Please send the license, ID Card and/or renewal application with a copy of the death certificate to:

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission

Driver Management Correspondence Unit

P.O. Box 134

Trenton, NJ 08666-0134.

License Plates

To Surrender plates, send by mail to:

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission
P.O. Box 129
Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0129

Note: You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope in order to receive a receipt once you surrender your plates by mail. You will need to save this receipt. It will serve as proof that the plates were surrendered in the event that charges are wrongfully acquired on them.
