Handle driver’s licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards in Delaware
After a loved one's passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver's licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.
Driver’s License
Delaware DMV will deactivate the driver’s license upon notification of death from the Vital Statistics department or after receiving a copy of the Death Certificate. If the driver passed away in Delaware, there is no need to bring a copy of the Death Certificate to the DMV. However, if the death occurred out of state, you must bring a copy of the Death Certificate to the DMV.
Disabled Person Placard (Handicap Placard)
The handicap placard should be returned to the DMV. You should return the placard to someone in the Uninsured Motorist Department.
License Plates
The deceased’s license plates should be returned to the DMV. You should return the plates to someone in the Uninsured Motorist Department. A slip will be provided for the plates.
