Handle driver's licenses, license plates, and disabled person placards in Connecticut
After a loved one's passing, you may need to deal with items such as driver's licenses, license plates, and handicap placards that have specific rules governing how they are discarded. Because some of these items can be used toward identity theft, it is important you follow these rules.
Driver’s License
Connecticut DMV does not require the deceased’s driver’s license to be returned. Instead, the driver’s license should be disposed of or destroyed.
Disabled Person Placard (Handicap Placard)
The disabled person placard should be destroyed.
License Plates
The deceased’s license plates can be deactivated online by following the directions here. The plates do not need to be returned to the DMV after they are canceled.
