Get a veteran's casket or urn

Deceased veterans with no next-of-kin and insufficient resources available for a VA National Cemetery burial may have earned the reimbursement of a casket or urn. You can be reimbursed the actual cost up to the maximum 2020 rate of $1,903 for a casket and $149 for an urn.

1) Confirm the veteran is eligible

  • No next of kin

  • Insufficient resources for burial

  • Eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery (see the relevant to-do if you are not sure)

2) Prove that the veteran is eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery:

  • Complete VA Form 40-10088, Request for Reimbursement of Casket/Urn

  • Complete VA Form 10091, Vendor Form

  • Gather military service discharge documents

  • Gather the invoice/receipt for the casket/urn used for the unclaimed Veteran’s burial
