How to close an iCloud/Apple account after a loved one passes

1) If you can unlock the devices yourself with the PIN, username, or password, you can change or clear them.

2) If you cannot figure out the log-in information, you can have Apple transfer the Apple devices to a new owner. They will usually not unlock the account for you.

  • Set up a call using the Apple Website by clicking through on this site until you get the option of “Talk to Apple Support Now”

  • They will call you back, ask basic questions and then connect you to a Senior Advisor

  • You will usually need to provide:

    • Death certificate

    • Letters Testamentary giving you authority to transfer property

    • Name and birthday of the person who purchased the device

  • The Senior Advisor will then help you

Note: Generally, accessing someone else’s account is a violation of Apple’s terms and conditions. However, some people recommend that you reset the password for the account and use this to log in. This could work if you already have access to the account’s email address or phone number. We are not endorsing this choice, but if recommended by your lawyer, you can reset the password using this link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201487
