How to close a GoDaddy account after a loved one passes

Fortunately, GoDaddy allows you to transfer web domains/accounts after the owner's death. Here are the steps to follow:

1) If you have access to the account email, you can reset the password:

  • Go to the Reset Password page: https://sso.godaddy.com/account/reset

  • Enter the Username or Customer #. If you don’t know the Username or Customer #, you can find the username this way:

    • Go to the Retrieve Username page: https://sso.godaddy.com/v1/account/retrieve?app=acco unt&realm=idp&path=/products

    • Enter the email address for the account and complete the security challenge (if possible).

    • Click Send Email.

    • In the Domain URL box, enter any domain name that's associated with the account and then click Filter. They'll immediately send a one-time-use PIN to the account email address.

    • In the Verification Code box, enter the PIN they sent you and then click Continue. They'll show you the username.

  • Complete the Security challenge, and then click Submit. In a few minutes, you'll receive an email with a link to reset the password

2) If you don’t have access to the email, you can follow this process:

  • Submit a request at https://supportcenter.secureserver.net/ChangeRequest/Index

  • You will need the following information:

    • The form will ask you who is requesting. Put Estate Administrator.

    • Legal documentation listing the name of the Estate Administrator

    • Death Certificate

    • Photo identification for the requestor/Estate Administrator. They require the government-issued photo identification to be a color copy, scan, or digital picture containing the pictured person, name, signature, and expiration date clearly.

  • If a business is listed as the registrant/account holder, provide a copy of the business ID. Examples of acceptable government-issued business identification are:

    • A copy of a government-issued business license, which is issued from a local, county, state, or federal agency.

    • For U.S. based businesses they can accept an IRS "Determination Letter". You may request a copy of this letter by contacting the IRS at 1-800-829-4933.

    • Note: They do not accept copies of articles of incorporation/organization, applications, documents printed from the internet, or tax returns as business ID.

  • Once this documentation is received, they will inform you if there is any additional information needed to process your request, or they will let you know that your request has been completed.
