How to close an AOL account after a loved one passes

First, decide what you want to do with the deceased’s account. There are three options:

1) Do nothing. The deceased’s account will remain as is.

2) Have AOL transfer the account to a new owner. To do so, call 1-800-827-6364

3) Have AOL delete the account. To do so, call 1-800-827-6364

Note: Generally, accessing someone else’s account is a violation of the terms and conditions. However, some people recommend that you can reset the password for the account and use this to log in. This could work if you already have access to the email address or phone number. We are not endorsing this choice, but if recommended by your lawyer, here is the process

  • Go to the sign-in link: https://login.aol.com/

  • Click “Trouble signing in?”

  • Enter your loved one’s sign-in email address or mobile number, recovery phone number, recovery email address, and account security question

  • Based on that choice, they will send an email, text message, or security questions that will enable you to reset the password
